About

Since 2018, I have obtained holistic and extensive full-time experience within education, utilising my skills to help an individual improve their skills to fulfil their goal.

This has predominantly been as a tutor, working in a secondary school, with agencies and an outreach service, and on a private basis, centred on developing writing processes and skills across a range of subjects. Additionally, I have conducted proofreading work for individuals across the academic and professional disciplines; alongside having created academic and creative writing courses for schools and companies.

My background guiding students through an array of writing and examination structures has provided a strong understanding of what an individual needs to develop and heighten their skills to meet their specific goals. This has included helping clients to attain sixth form and university places, improving their grades by at least one level, to boosting their academic and writing confidence through working on a targeted area.

My students have stemmed from a wide range of academic and personal backgrounds, adapting my lesson plans and style to accommodate any personal and learning needs. I have worked with students with a range of special educational needs – including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia; individuals who need mental health support; high-achieving students who require an extra push; to people who either find their studies to be boring or difficult.  Furthermore, my clients range from students aged 11 and above to individuals studying at university level, alongside working with adults and professionals.

This informs my tailored tutoring style, being an analytical, empathetic, and patient person who forms bespoke lesson plans around the academic needs and goals, personality, and learning style of the individual. Through creating a relaxed learning environment, this enables a rapport to be developed, where an individual is encouraged to be an active participant within lessons by using interactive and creative techniques. In providing a consistent academic approach, this aims to develop a person’s skills incrementally through a carefully designed scheme of work that aims to build and reinforce learning blocks acquired towards a student’s end goal.

This career utilises my educational background, having graduated from Southampton University in 2018 with a 2:1 in English Literature and History. I am currently studying for a Master’s in Contemporary Literature, Culture, and Theory at King’s College, highlighting my wider interest in the subject and academic endeavours.

Additionally, my outside interests revolve around culture: I read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books; attending quizzes; regularly going to gigs and the cinema; alongside being a long-suffering fan of Barnet FC.

Furthermore, I am DBS accredited, with my certificate being on the Update Service; whilst I also obtained a Level 5 TEFL Certificate, being able to work with students who may have lower levels of English.

Testimonial – Jordan, A Level Student, 2022 – 2024:

“Josh tutored me for my English Literature and History A-Levels. He was extremely helpful in explaining methodologies and essay writing techniques and was patient in teaching me how to achieve a higher standard of work, which helped me move from a B in my mocks to an A* overall in these subjects. He also guided me to achieve an A in my EPQ, teaching me planning and research methods. Through his tutoring, this helped me to get into Warwick University, so I would highly recommend Josh as a tutor.”evels, enabling me to get into Warwick University, so I would highly recommend Josh as a tutor.”

Testimonial – Sam, Proofreading Client, 2024 – present day:

Before I started having Josh proofread my work, my history essays were at high 3rds and low 2:2s. However after reaching out to Josh, he managed to help with the flow and structure of my essays that gave me the confidence to start achieving 2:1s. This was helped significantly with his subject knowledge in areas such as the Soviet Union, Cold War, and late British imperialism. His clear and detailed feedback on every paragraph I wrote was terrific but the best part of his help is his efficiency to return feedback. Usually work would be returned within a working day or two, that would have a strong level of constructive feedback that I can only dream of my university tutors giving. Thanks to Josh’s efficient and clear guidance, my average grade has jumped significantly to the extent I am now expecting to get a 2:1 when I graduate next year.
